Kuqa City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Aksu prefecture in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is located in the central part of the southern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains and the northern edge of the Tarim Basin, with a topography that is high in the north and low in the south, tilting from northwest to southeast, rich in heat, with a dry climate, sparse precipitation, hot summers, and dry, cold winters, and a total area of 15,200 square kilometers. In December 2019, approved by the State Council, it was agreed to abolish Kucha County and establish the county-level Kucha City. Kuqa is a national historical and cultural city, with more than 195 cultural relics such as grottoes, ancient castles, beacon towers, etc. in Kuqa, which are listed as 2 World Cultural Heritage Sites of the Silk Road Kuqa Section, 10 national key cultural relics protection units, and 41 autonomous region-level sites. Famous tourist attractions include the Mysterious Grand Canyon of Tianshan Mountain, Kizil Grottoes, Kumutula Thousand Buddha Cave, Kucha King's Mansion, and Subash Ancient City. Kucha is located in the middle of the route from Urumqi to Kashgar and from Dushanzi to Hotan, National Highway 314 and 217 intersect in the county, the South Xinjiang Railway crosses the county, and the civil aviation goes directly to Urumqi, which makes Kucha a distribution center for passengers and cargoes in the south of Xinjiang, where the aviation, railroads, and highways are intertwined. Kuche is a translation of the Turkic language, Uyghur place names, hutong meaning. "Because of its place for the hinterland of the southern border of the main street, so the name." The name "Kuche" has been written in various ways since ancient times, including "Quci", "Quzi", "Qu Xian", "Qiuzhi", "Quzhi", "Quxian", "Hatz", "Kuqiao" and so on. It was named Kucha in 1758, the twenty-third year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is said that "Kuche" is an ancient Guzi word meaning "the city of the Guzi people".In 2018, it was reconfirmed as a national sanitary county (township), and is one of the top 100 counties and cities in western China in 2019.
