Liulin County was formed in April 1971, renamed Liulin County from Lishi County.On October 23, 2003, the State Council approved the abolition of the Lvliang District and the establishment of Lvliang City. Since then, Liulin County is under the jurisdiction of Lvliang City. The county is located in the transportation hub of North China to Northwest China. Seven national and provincial trunk routes, such as the Tai-China-Yin high-speed railroad, the south-central sea corridor, the Xiaoliu Railway Coal Special Line, National Highway 307, the Qing-Yin Expressway, the main highway along the Yellow River, and the tourist highway along the Yellow River, all pass through the county. Liulin County was ranked among the "Top 100 Counties in Comprehensive Strength of National Small and Medium-sized Cities" for two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016, and was selected as "200 Characteristic and Charming Demonstration Counties with the Most Investment Potential in China" by the World Famous Brand Conference in 2017. There are many red culture and patriotic education bases in the county, such as Hechang Martyrs' Mausoleum, General Liu Zhidan's Martyrdom Place, Sanjiao Red Army Eastern March Memorial Hall, and Cypress Hill Revolutionary Martyrs' Mausoleum in Mu Village.
