Xi'an, anciently known as Chang'an and Haojing, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province, is the capital of Shaanxi Province, a sub-provincial city, a megacity, a national central city, the core city of Xi'an metropolitan area as well as the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration, an important central city in western China as approved by the State Council, and an important scientific research, education and industrial base of the country.
