Jinan, also known as Quan Cheng, Qizhou, and Lok Yi, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province, the capital of the province, a sub-provincial city, a megacity, the core city of the Jinan Metropolitan Area, and the central city of the southern wing of the Bohai Rim as approved by the State Council. As of 2022, the city has 10 districts and 2 counties under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 10,244.45 square kilometers and a resident population of 9.415 million.
Jinan is located in east China and west-central Shandong Province. The city's terrain is high in the south and low in the north, with low hills, sloping plains in front of the mountains and alluvial plains on the Yellow River in that order. It belongs to the warm temperate continental monsoon climate zone, with distinct monsoon winds and four distinct seasons. Jinan City is the resident of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Army organs in the Northern Theater of Operations, an important intersection on the Bohai Rim Economic Zone and the Beijing-Shanghai Economic Axis, and one of the important transportation hubs in East China.
In the ninth year of the Ming Dynasty (1376), Jinan became the capital of Shandong Province. In July, 1929, Jinan City was officially established. Jinan is a national historical and cultural city, named for its location in the south of the "Jishui", one of the four ancient ditches (the former course of which is the present-day Yellow River). As far back as 9,000 years ago, in the early Neolithic Age, there were ancestors living here. The Longshan Culture, characterized by polished black pottery 4,000 to 4,500 years ago, was first discovered in 1928 in Longshan Town, an eastern suburb of Jinan, and was named after it. Jinan is known for its many springs, including the "72 famous springs", the "First Spring in the World", the "Lotus Blossoms on Four Sides, Willows on Three Sides, and a City of Mountain Colors and Half a City of Lakes", as well as the "Eight Scenic Spots of Jinan", which are famous all over the world. Jinan is famous for its eight scenic spots, and is a tourist city with unique features of "mountains, springs, lakes, rivers and cities".
In 2023, Jinan's gross domestic product (GDP) was 1,275.74 billion yuan, an increase of 6.1% over the previous year at constant prices. In terms of sub-industry, the added value of primary industry is 42.95 billion yuan, an increase of 4.1% over the previous year; the added value of secondary industry is 431.20 billion yuan, an increase of 7.8%; and the added value of tertiary industry is 801.59 billion yuan, an increase of 5.2%.
