The Republic of the Union of Myanmar (English: The Republic of the Union of Myanmar), abbreviated as Myanmar (Myanmar), is a country in Southeast Asia and a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Southwest of the Burma Sea, northwest of India and Bangladesh as neighbors, northeast of China, southeast of Thailand and Laos, the capital of Nay Pyi Taw, with a population of 54.17 million (2022), a total of 135 ethnic groups, more than 85% of the country's people believe in Buddhism, the country is divided into seven divisions, seven states and the Union Territory.
The country was united in 1044, with the Bagan, Toungoo, and Kampung dynasties, and was occupied by the British in three Anglo-Burmese wars between 1824 and 1885, and was made a province of British India in 1886; it declared independence from the British Commonwealth and established the Union of Burma in January 1948, and was renamed the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma in January 1974; in September 1988, it was renamed the Union of Myanmar, and was given the title of the Union of Myanmar. In September 1988, the military, led by Defense Minister Su Maung, took over the reins of power, renaming the country the "Union of Myanmar" in September 1988.In May 2008, a new constitution established a presidential system.In February 2011, Thein Sein was elected by the National Assembly to serve as the first president of Myanmar.In March 2016, the parliament elected U Htin Kyaw to serve as the first president of Myanmar in more than half a century. U Htin Kyaw was the first democratically elected non-military president in more than half a century.On February 1, 2021, President Win Myint, Senior State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, and a number of senior officials of the National League for Democracy (NLD) were detained by the military.On April 16, the Committee of Representatives of the Union of Myanmar Parliament declared the formation of a government of national unity, with Win Myint serving as president.The new constitution provides for a presidential system.
With favorable natural conditions and abundant resources, Myanmar is one of the least developed countries and is mainly an agricultural country, with more than 60% of the population engaged in agriculture, and its agricultural products include rice, wheat and sugarcane, etc. Myanmar is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and it has joined the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA), China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA), South Korea-ASEAN Free Trade Area (KORUS-ASEAN FTA), Japan -ASEAN FTA, and India-ASEAN FTA.In 2019, Myanmar had a GDP of $76 billion and a per capita of $1,407.
