Changsha, also known as Star City, is a prefecture-level city, provincial capital and megacity under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province, an important central city in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and a member of the Changzhutan Metropolitan Circle as approved by the State Council, a pilot area for the comprehensive supporting reform of the national "Two-Shape Society", an important food production base in China, an important node city for the city clusters in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, a comprehensive transportation hub and a national logistics hub. Changsha City is located in central China, north-eastern Hunan Province, the lower reaches of the Xiangjiang River and the western edge of the Changliu Basin, with a subtropical monsoon climate, mild climate and abundant precipitation. Changsha is the best international image city in China (mainland), the cultural capital of East Asia, and the world's "capital of media art". Changsha has created cultural brands such as "TV Xiangjun", "Publishing Xiangjun" and "Animation Xiangjun". Changsha has 58 colleges and universities, 97 independent scientific research institutions, 52 academicians of both academies, 14 national engineering and technology research centers, and 15 national key engineering laboratories; and scientific research achievements such as hybrid rice breeding, "Tianhe" supercomputer, and the first 3D sintering printer in China.
Changsha is one of the first batch of national historical and cultural cities, with its name and site unchanged for 3,000 years, and is known as "the hometown of Qu Jia", "the famous city of Chu and Han", and "Xiangxiang Xiaosi and Surabaya". There are historical relics such as Mawangdui Han Tomb, Four Sheep Square Zun, Wu Jian of the Three Kingdoms, Yuelu Academy, Tongguan Kiln and so on. The Hunan culture of "applying oneself to the world and accepting all kinds of things" has been condensed. Changsha is one of the birthplaces of the Restoration Movement and the Old Democratic Revolution at the end of the Qing Dynasty, as well as one of the birthplaces of the New Democracy. Changsha is also one of the birthplaces of the new democracy, and is home to such celebrities as Huang Xing, Cai E, and Liu Shaoqi.
In 2023, Changsha realized a GDP of 1,433.198 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%.
