Steep Hill River Township, belonging to Xinyang City, Xinyang County, Henan Province, is located in the central and western part of Xin County, bordering Xinji Township in the east, Chendian Township and Guojiahe Township in the south, connected to Kafang Township in the west, and adjoining Qianxiang Township and Wu Chenhe Township in the north. The area covers 133.84 square kilometers, with a household population of 18,866 as of the end of 2018.
From the Ming Dynasty to the middle of the Republic of China, it belonged to Shacheng City of Guangshan County. In the third year of the Republic of China (1914), it belonged to Shacheng Town of Guangshan County.In June 1949, it was reclassified as Shacheng Town.In June 1962, it was established as Steep Mountain River Commune.In May 1983, it was reclassified as Steep Mountain River Township.
