Zhaoqing, anciently known as Duanzhou, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, an important node city of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Pearl River-West River Economic Belt, and an important part of the Guangzhou-Foshan-Zhaoxing Economic Circle and the Guangzhou Metropolitan Area.It was rated as a third-tier city in 2023. The city has three districts, four counties, and one county-level city under its jurisdiction, with a total area of about 14,897.45 square kilometers, and as of the end of 2022, Zhaoqing had a resident population of 4,128,400 people.
Located in the central and western part of Guangdong Province, Zhaoqing is an important transportation hub from the southeastern coast to the southwestern provinces. The Seven Star Rock in the city of Zhaoqing is known as the "First Wonder of Lingnan"; Dinghu Mountain is a national nature reserve. Star Lake Scenic Area as the center, along the Xijiang River, Suijiang River upstream, Panlong Gorge, "the world's first stone", Thousand-Layer Peak, Guangning Bamboo Sea, Yan Yan and other attractions, constituting a thousand miles of tourism corridor of the splendid picture.
Zhaoqing is a national historical and cultural city, a national civilized city, and a livable landscape city in Guangfu, which is the birthplace of Lingnan indigenous culture, Xijiang culture and Guangfu culture, and also the earliest meeting point of the Central Plains culture and Lingnan culture, and the Western culture and traditional Chinese culture. Zhaoqing is the gateway to Guangdong and Guangxi, and has the reputation of "the first state in the south of the Ling Table"; historically, it has become the political, economic and cultural center of Lingnan or Southwest China for five times. In the Han Dynasty, Guangxin was set up; in the Sui Dynasty, Duanzhou was set up; in the Song Dynasty (1118), Zhaoqing Prefecture was set up; from the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, Zhaoqing was the residence of the Governor's Offices of Guangdong and Guangxi; and at the time of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was the capital of the Yongli Dynasty of the Southern Ming Dynasty.
In 2023, Zhaoqing's gross regional product was 279.251 billion yuan, up 3.7% year-on-year. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 49.894 billion yuan, up 4.4% year-on-year; the added value of the secondary industry was 115.456 billion yuan, up 2.8% year-on-year; and the added value of the tertiary industry was 113.901 billion yuan, up 4.2% year-on-year.
