Zhaoqing New District was officially established in October 2012 with a planned area of 115 square kilometers. As of 2023, the district had a permanent resident population of approximately 103,000 and a gross regional product (GRP) of 8.588 billion yuan.

　　Zhaoqing New Area occupies a strategic location connecting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area with the ASEAN Economic Community and the Greater Southwest region. It serves as the largest contiguous development zone linking Guangzhou, Foshan, and Zhaoqing with Hong Kong and Macao, and is also the geographical center of Zhaoqing’s southeastern sector. With abundant land resources, a beautiful ecological environment, and immense development potential, the area possesses the foundation and potential to function as a hub for relocating functions from the Greater Bay Area and as a center for aggregating resources in the Greater Southwest.The Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government have high expectations for the Zhaoqing New District, designating it as a major development and innovation platform for Guangdong Province. It has been strategically positioned as a pioneer and pilot zone for Guangdong’s exploration of new urbanization processes, as well as the core hub city connecting Guangdong with the Greater Southwest. The New District has also been recognized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development as a “National Green Ecological Demonstration District.”
