Tai Po County, part of Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, is located in northeastern Guangdong Province, close to Pinghe County and Yongding District in Fujian Province in the northeast, connected to Raoping County in Chaozhou City in the southeast, Meixian District and Meijiang District in Meizhou City in the west, and Fengshun County in the south, with an area of 2,467 square kilometers. As of October 2021, there are 14 towns under the jurisdiction of Tai Po County, and 3 other forest farms. As of 00:00 on November 1, 2020, the resident population of Tai Po County was 330,948 people.
Tai Po County was founded in the 9th year of Yixi of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (413), and its former name was successively Yizhao County and Wanchuan County, with the county seat located in Huliao. In the 14th year of Chenghua (1478) of the Ming Dynasty, Raoping County was established, and Tai Po was the land of Raoping County of Chaozhou Prefecture. After the establishment of New China in 1949, Tai Po County was successively part of Xingmei Prefecture, Guangdong East Administrative Region, Shantou Prefecture, Meixian Prefecture in 1965, Meixian County in 1983, and Meizhou City in 1988, and the county seat was moved from Chaoyang to Huliao in 1961. In 1961, the county government was moved from Chaoyang to Huliao. The Meijiang, Tingjiang and Hanjiang rivers flow through the county, and there are Meidai Expressway and Meikan Railway in the county. Tai Po County is known as the "Hometown of Culture, Hometown of Overseas Chinese, Hometown of Longevity, Hometown of Ceramics, Hometown of Famous Tea, Hometown of Chinese Poetry, Hometown of Chinese Celadon Porcelain, Hometown of Chinese Pomelo", and has been recognized as a county in the Central Soviet Zone. Tai Po County has been recognized as "China's Green Ecological Honeydew Demonstration County" and "2011, 2014 National Key Tea Producing County", "China's Top Ten Tea Industry Transformation and Upgrading Demonstration County". It is a pilot county for financial reform in Guangdong Province. It is the pilot of financial reform in directly governed counties in Guangdong Province. Xiyan Oolong Tea and Tai Po Honey Pomelo in Tai Po County are recognized as National Geographical Indication Protected Products. Hakka dialect is spoken in the whole territory of Tai Po County. With a strong Hakka flavor, it is known as the "Hakka Shangri-La", and has been included in the scope of the National Hakka Culture (Meizhou) Ecological Reserve by the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China.
