Zhoushan City, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province, located in northeastern Zhejiang Province, with the terrain tilted from southwest to northeast, the southern island is large, high in elevation, and densely arranged, while the northern island is small, low in elevation, sparsely distributed, and surrounded by the sea on all sides; it has a subtropical monsoon climate; it has a total area of 22,200 square kilometers, with a sea area of 20,800 square kilometers, and 4,696 islands and reefs with a total land area of 1,440.2 square kilometers. On June 10, 1953, Zhoushan Prefecture was established; in January 1987, Zhoushan District was abolished and Zhoushan City was established. Zhoushan City is a city in the central area of the Yangtze River Delta, an important city in the Shanghai Metropolitan Area, and the location of China's fourth state-level new area Zhoushan Islands New Area, an international port and island tourist city, a pilot area of the marine economy, within the territory of the State Council approved the establishment of the management and supervision of the bulk commodity trading center, Zhoushan Area of China (Zhejiang) Pilot Free Trade Zone. The annual cargo throughput of Ningbo Zhoushan Port ranks the first in the world, and the container throughput ranks the third in the world. in 2023, Ningbo Zhoushan ranks the 9th in the world in the comprehensive ranking of international shipping center cities. zhoushan city has two national scenic spots, namely, Putuoshan Mountain and Shengsi Islands, and two provincial scenic spots, namely, Dai Shan and Taohua Island, as well as the island historical and cultural city, Dinghai.
In 2023, Zhoushan City realized a GDP of 210.08 billion yuan, an increase of 8.2% year-on-year, 2.2 percentage points higher than the provincial average.
