Yuyao City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province, administered by Ningbo City, is located in the eastern part of Zhejiang Province and on the south coast of Hangzhou Bay, bordering Jiangbei District and Haishu District to the east, Simeing Mountain to the south, Fenghua District and Shengzhou City to the south, Shangyu District to the west, Cixi City to the north, and the border of Haiyan County on the centerline of Hangzhou Bay of the Qiantang River in the northwest; it has a subtropical monsoon climate in the north, with a total area of 1,526.86 square kilometers. During the Spring and Autumn Period, Yuyao belonged to the state of Yue. In the middle of the Warring States period, Yuyao became under the jurisdiction of the State of Chu. During the Qin Dynasty, Yuyao was established as a county, with a history of more than 2,200 years. 1985, approved by the State Council, Yuyao was abolished as a county and set up as a city. 1995, Yuyao was upgraded by the State Council to a second-class city.
