Haining City, also known as Chao Cheng, is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Zhejiang Province, administered by Jiaxing City. It is located in the northern part of Zhejiang Province, in the Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou Plain, adjacent to Hangzhou City, between latitude 30°15′ and 30°35′ north and longitude 120°18′ and 120°52′ east, with a total area of 863 square kilometers (including the waters of the Qiantang River). As of 2022, Haining City had a resident population of 1,101,600 people. As of June 2023, Haining City has 4 streets and 8 towns under its jurisdiction, with the Municipal People's Government stationed at 226 Haizhou West Road, Haizhou Street.
The name of Haining City means "Haihong Tranquility, Haiwao Tranquility". Three Kingdoms Wu Huangwu two years (223), analyzed Haiyan, by boxing, set Yanguan County, belonging to the Wu County, Haining for the beginning of the county. In the ninth year of the reign of Emperor Kaihuang of the Sui Dynasty (589), Yanguan County (present-day Haining) became part of Hangzhou, and in November 1986, Haining was abolished as a county and set up as a city under the administration of Jiaxing City. It has given birth to such famous figures as Xu Zhimo, Jin Yong, Jin Xueshu and Jiang Baili.
In 2023, Haining will realize a regional GDP value of 131.8 billion yuan, an increase of 8%.
