Shushi County, belongs to Kashgar Region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Located in the southwestern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, it is situated on the eastern foot of the Pamir Plateau and the western edge of the Tarim Basin on the Kashgar Gaer Oasis, with 13 ethnic groups including Uygur, Han, Kirghiz, Mongolian, Hui, Kazakh, Uzbek, and Tajik. The administrative area covers 2,708 square kilometers, and at the end of 2019, Shushi County had a household population of 281,469.
Shushi County was formerly part of Shule Zhili Prefecture, a subsidiary land. In Uyghur, it is called "Kashgar Gaer Kona Xiehaier", meaning the old city of Kashgar. Also known as Tok Zak, early Qing dynasty belongs to Kashgar Gaer, "the western region map" as Tok Kursak, "the western region with the text" explained as: "Tok, full also; Kursak, big belly also. Abundance of land, in the crops can be full, so the name." That is, can eat a full stomach (place), meaning "rich people rich". Tokezak is now interpreted as "nine pieces of white land", may be due to the transformation of speech.
Shushi east of Kashgar City and Gashi County adjacent to the west to the gravel Gobi connected to the Wuqia County, the south and Shule County, Aketao County border, north of the Karatag Mountain, Kumatag Mountain and Atushi City. The county town of Tokezak is 15 kilometers from Kashgar City and 1,482 kilometers from Urumqi City.
Shushi produces 27 categories and 50 varieties of ethnic musical instruments, covering almost all kinds of traditional Uyghur musical instruments, and the handcraft of ethnic musical instruments is listed in the national intangible cultural heritage program. As a national designated open county, Shushi County enjoys independent import and export trade rights. on January 24, 2020, the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) agreed that Shushi County should withdraw from the sequence of poverty-stricken counties.
In 2022, the gross regional product of Shushi County will be RMB 6.195 billion, an increase of 6.7% from 2021.
