Yu County, belonging to Yangquan City, Shanxi Province, is located in the eastern part of Shanxi Province, at the western foot of the Taihang Mountains, bordering Pingshan County, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province and Pingding County, Shanxi Province to the east, Yangqu County, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province to the west, Shouyang County, Jinzhong City, and the suburbs of Yangquan City to the south, and Wutai County, Xinzhou City, and Dingxiang County, Xinzhou City, to the north. The county covers an area of 2,514.4 square kilometers, with 8 towns and 5 townships under its jurisdiction. As of 2022, the resident population of Yu County is 279,151.
Yu County has a long history and culture, and is one of the oldest counties in Shanxi, with a history of 2,600 years. Yu County was established in the 19th year of Qin Shi Huang (228 BC). The world-famous story of the hiding of Zhao's orphans took place in Yu County, which is known as the "town of loyalty and righteousness". There are famous scenic spots such as Hidden Mountain, Longtang Waterfall, Temple Pingan Hot Spring and Thousand Buddha Temple. The mountain ranges in Yu County are longitudinal, with Baima Mountain stretching east to west and Guantou Liang running north to south, dividing Yu County into two basins, one east and one west. The Shitai High-speed Railway passes through the area, and there is Yangquan North Station. It is one of the major coal-producing counties in Shanxi Province, with more than 30 kinds of mineral deposits such as coal, iron ore, bauxite, marble, etc., especially coal and iron as the most, with 3.7 billion tons of geological reserves of coal and an annual output of 12 million tons.
