The Yangquan High-Tech Industrial Development Zone is located in the northeastern part of Yangquan City, Shanxi Province, and was established in 1993. It was renamed from the Yangquan Economic Development Zone. In January 1996, it was approved by the Shanxi Provincial Government as a provincial-level economic development zone, covering an area of 10.56 square kilometers.On July 6, 2017, the Shanxi Provincial Government approved the integration of the Yangquan East District Industrial Park, the Jiao District Baiquan Industrial Park, and the Jiao District Yinying Industrial Park into the Yangquan Economic Development Zone, thereby expanding the zone.Following the expansion, the Yangquan Economic Development Zone has a planned area of 80 square kilometers, divided into South and North Zones. The South Zone covers 60 square kilometers, comprising the original 19.19 square kilometers of the development zone prior to expansion, the 3.31 square kilometers of the Baiquan Industrial Park in the Suburban District, and 37.5 square kilometers from the integrated Yangquan East Industrial Park; the North Zone (Yinying Industrial Park in the Suburban District) covers 20 square kilometers.
