Liaoyang City, known as Xiangping and Liaodong City in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Liaoning Province, a modern industrial city with the petrochemical industry as the main focus, the center city of Liaoyang Central and South China, and a national historical and cultural city. As of 2022, Liaoyang City has five districts and one county under its jurisdiction, and one county-level city under its administration, with a total area of 4,735.78 square kilometers, a built-up area of 1,395.5 square kilometers, and a resident population of 1,543,000 at the end of the year.
Liaoyang is located in northeastern China, central Liaoning, is the deputy center of the Shenyang metropolitan area, emerging modern petrochemical light textile industrial base and China's outstanding tourist cities, is one of the earliest cities in northeastern China, from the 3rd century BC to the early 17th century, has been the political, economic and cultural center of northeastern China, transportation hubs and military towns.
Liaoyang is one of the oldest cities in Northeast China, a famous cultural city with a history of more than 2,000 years. During the Warring States period, it was the seat of Liaodong County of the State of Yan, and followed the Yan system in the Qin Dynasty. At the beginning of Han Dynasty, Liaoyang was the capital of Liaodong State, and later the Liaodong County was still located here. During the Gongsun period, Xiangping was the capital of Pingzhou and Liaodong County. In the early Western Jin Dynasty, Xiangping again became the capital of Liaodong Kingdom, and was later changed to Ping Prefecture. During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Liaoyang was successively occupied by local ethnic regimes such as the Former Yan, the Former Qin, the Later Yan, and the Goguryeo. In the Tang Dynasty, Liaoyang was the capital of Liaocheng Prefecture, and at one time it became the capital of the Andong Capital. During the Liao and Jin Dynasties, the Liaoyang Prefecture in Tokyo was established. In the Yuan Dynasty, it was the residence of Liaoyang Province. In the Ming Dynasty, the Liaodong Commanding General's Office was set up to govern the whole Liaoning province. In the early Qing Dynasty, the capital was built in Liaoyang, and then Liaoyang County was set up in Liaoyang Prefecture, and then Liaoyang County was changed to Liaoyang Prefecture. In the Republic of China, Liaoyang County was established.
In 2023, the GDP of Liaoyang City was 87.84 billion yuan, an increase of 1.6% year-on-year.
