Wuxi City, abbreviated as Xie, also known as Liangxi, Jincui, Xicheng, Zhenze, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, is located in East China and the south of Jiangsu Province, depending on the Yangtze River in the north, bordered by Taihu Lake in the south, neighboring Suzhou City in the east, Changzhou City in the west, and bordering with Huzhou City in Zhejiang Province and Xuancheng City in Anhui Province in the south and southwest, and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the territory, with a total area of 4,627.46 square kilometers. As of the end of 2023, Wuxi had a resident population of 7,495,500 people. The city has five districts and two county-level cities under its jurisdiction, and the municipal government is located in Binhu District.
Wuxi City is an important birthplace of Jiangnan civilization and Wu culture. Legend has it that the city was named Wuxi because of the digging out of tin mines in Mount Xishan, which was documented at the end of the Shang Dynasty. In the fifth year of Han Gaozu (202 BC), Wuxi County was first established, and then belonged to Changzhou Prefecture for a long time. Since the 16th year of the Republic of China (1927), it has been directly under Jiangsu Province, and on April 23, 1949, Wuxi County was promoted to Wuxi City. Wuxi City is rich in humanities, and has given birth to such historical celebrities as Qian Zhongshu, Qin Bangxian, Rong Yiren, Ah Bing, Xu Beihong and so on. Wuxi is an important scenic tourist city and a national historical and cultural city, with famous scenic spots such as Soft-shelled turtle islet, Lingshan Giant Buddha, Huishan Ancient Town, Donglin Academy, Nanchan Temple, and Qingming Bridge Historical and Cultural District.
Wuxi is the center city of Yangtze River Delta, an important part of Shanghai Metropolitan Area and Suzhou-Wuxi-Changsha Metropolitan Area, and the main birthplace of China's modern national industry and commerce, township enterprises, and the "Southern Jiangsu Model", as well as landmark industries such as Internet of Things, integrated circuits, and biomedicine. Wuxi has convenient transportation, with the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway, Shanghai-Nanjing City Railway and Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Railway passing through the city; the Wuxi Metro, a metro system, has an operating mileage of 113.53 kilometers; and there is the Class 4E Southern Jiangsu Shuofang International Airport in the southeast of the city.
In 2023, Wuxi City will realize a gross regional product of 154.5619 billion yuan, per capita disposable income of 69,016 yuan, and general public budget revenue of 119.542 billion yuan.
