Liyang City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province, administered by Changzhou City, is located in the southern part of Jiangsu Province and the southwestern part of Changzhou City, between latitude 31°09'-31°41'N and longitude 119°08'-119°36'E. It is situated in the southwestern part of the Yangtze River Delta at the junction of the provinces of Jiangsu and Anhui, neighboring Yixing City in the east and Gaochun District of Nanjing City in the west, Lishui District of Nanjing in the west, bordering Guangde City and Langxi County of Anhui Province in the south, and Jurong City and Jintan District in the north, with a total area of 1535.87 square kilometers. There are various landforms in Liyang city, such as low mountains, hills, plains and polders. The climate of Liyang City is subtropical monsoon climate in the northern hemisphere, mild and humid, with four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall and sufficient sunshine.In 2022, the resident population of Liyang City was 806,000, and the urbanization rate was 64.6%.
In the third year of Wude of Tang Gaozu (620), Yongshi County was abolished and the eastern part of Lishui was reset to Liyang County, since then Liyang has been used continuously as the name of the administrative area.In March 1983, after the implementation of the system of municipal management of counties, Liyang County was under the jurisdiction of Changzhou City.In August 1990, approved by the State Council, Liyang County was abolished, and Liyang City was set up on the county level. As of October 2022, Liyang city has 3 streets and 9 towns under the jurisdiction of Liyang city, and the municipal people's government is stationed at No.18, Nanhuan Road, Li Cheng Street.
In 2023, Liyang city realized a gross regional product of 155.722 billion yuan, an increase of 9.7% at comparable prices.
