Shanghuang Town is located in the northeastern part of Liyang City, 18 kilometers from downtown Liyang. It is situated at the junction of Liyang, Yixing, and Jintan. The town covers a total area of 47 square kilometers and comprises 8 administrative villages and 1 neighborhood committee, with a total population of 26,500.

As part of the Shanghai Economic Open Zone in the Yangtze River Delta, Shanghuang is traversed by Provincial Highway 239. It lies 200 kilometers from Shanghai and Hangzhou, and approximately 100 kilometers from Nanjing, Suzhou, and Wuxi. The distance from Shanghuang to Nanjing Lukou International Airport is 85.5 kilometers, taking about one hour.The integration of provincial, national, and expressways has established a seamless, multi-dimensional modern transportation network for Shanghuang, making its transportation system highly convenient and well-connected in all directions.

Shanghuang is rich in natural resources, with the 10-Li Mountains to the south and the vast Changdang Lake to the north. It seamlessly blends the beauty of mountain forests with the charm of waterways, earning it honors such as “Township with Beautiful Environment,” “Jiangsu Provincial Sanitary Town,” and “National Livable and Beautiful Village.”The mountain derives its name from a passage in Zhou Chu’s *Record of Local Customs* (written by a scholar from the Jin Dynasty), which states: “Long ago, a woman surnamed Lao attained enlightenment here.” The discovery of Sinopithecus fossil remains at Shuimu Mountain has further earned Shanghuang the reputation as the “Cradle of Humanity.” A source of great pride for the people of Shanghuang is that Yuan Yuan, the mascot of the Asian Youth Games, was created based on the Sinopithecus.

In recent years, Shanghuang Town has vigorously promoted the growth and strengthening of local key enterprises while actively attracting new projects. A series of new projects, including Shida Machinery Manufacturing, Kailin Cold Chain, Huifeng Metal, Milan Shipbuilding, Zhiwei New Energy, and Xuda New Energy, have successively been completed and put into operation. As of the end of 2023, Shanghuang had over 50 industrial enterprises above designated size.
