Xinyang City, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, is located in the southern part of Henan Province, at the junction of Hubei, Henan and Anhui provinces, with the terrain high in the south and low in the north, the Yu'nan mountainous terrain consisting of the Tongbai Mountains and the Dabie Mountains in the west and south, hilly and granite in the center, and the Huanghuai Plain and depressions in the north, which is a subtropical to warm-temperate zone transition area with an obvious monsoon climate; it has a total area of 18,916 square kilometers. As of February 2024, Xinyang City has 2 districts and 8 counties under its jurisdiction. As of the end of 2022, Xinyang City had a resident population of 6,166,000 people.
In the first year of Song Taiping Xingguo (976), to avoid the taboo of Song Emperor Zhao Guangyi, the Yiyang Army was changed to the Xinyang Army, which was called the Xinyang Army, and led the 2 counties of Xinyang and Luoshan, which was the first time that Xinyang appeared as a place name in history; in June 1998, the prefecture-level Xinyang City was established. Xinyang historical and cultural characteristics of both the Chu culture and the Central Plains culture, is China's north-south geography, climate transition zone and Yu-Chu cultural fusion zone, is the Chinese family name to the ancestors and the Hakka people at home and abroad to find their roots and explore the source of the place. Located in the core area of the old revolutionary area of Dabie Mountain, known as "the cradle of the Red Army, the hometown of the generals", also known as the landscape tea, "China Mao Jian capital". It is the hometown of Sun Shu Ao, Chun Shen Jun, Sima Guang, Zheng Chenggong and other historical figures, and the end of Confucius' travels around the world. Within the city, there are scenic spots such as Jigong Mountain, Nanwan Lake, Dashandian Reservoir, Lingshan Temple and West Jiuhua Mountain.
In 2022, Xinyang City realized a regional GDP of 319.623 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 3.2% at comparable prices.
