Pingliang City, known as Weizhou in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Gansu Province. It is located in the east of Gansu Province, at the intersection of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia provinces (regions), neighboring Shaanxi Xianyang in the east, Gansu Dingxi and Baiyin in the west, Shaanxi Baoji and Gansu Tianshui in the south, and leaning against Ningxia Guyuan and Gansu Qingyang in the north, with a total area of 11,000 square kilometers. As of June 2023, Pingliang City has 1 district and 5 counties under its jurisdiction, and is in charge of 1 county-level city. As of the end of 2022, Pingliang had a resident population of 1,822,500.
Pingliang is one of the important birthplaces of the Chinese nation and Huaxia civilization. As early as 8,000 years ago, Fuxi, the founder of the Chinese humanities, was born in Jingning Ancient Chengji; more than 4,700 years ago, Emperor Xuan Yuan Huangdi inquired about Kongdong Mountain three times; and more than 3,000 years ago, the ancestors of the Zhou Dynasty created a relatively advanced farming culture in the Jinghe River Basin. In the twelfth year of Jianyuan (376), Fu Jian, the former Qin general, attacked Qianliang and set up Pingliang County, taking the meaning of "pacifying the Liang country", from which Pingliang got its name. The history of Pingliang has been characterized by such moving stories as the Yellow Emperor's questioning, the King of Wen's fencing, the Qin Emperor's sacrifice to heaven, and the Han Wu's western tour, etc., and it has given birth to such figures as Huang Fu Qui, the originator of the world's acupuncture medicine, the famous generals of the Southern Song Dynasty who fought against the Jin Dynasty, Wu Jie and Wu Lin, and one of the "Eight Talented Men of Jiajing" in the Ming Dynasty, Zhao Shichun.
In 2022, Pingliang City will realize a gross regional product of 64.158 billion yuan, of which the added value of the primary industry will be 15.173 billion yuan, the added value of the secondary industry will be 19.070 billion yuan, and the added value of the tertiary industry will be 29.914 billion yuan. The added value of primary, secondary and tertiary industries accounted for 23.6%, 29.7% and 46.7% of the regional GDP respectively. Calculated on the basis of the resident population, the annual per capita GDP was 35,182 yuan.
