Tongling City, referred to as "Tong", alias Tongdu, the ancient name of Dingling, Yi'an, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province, is the central area of the Yangtze River Delta city, located in East China, Anhui Province, south-central, downstream of the Yangtze River, the terrain is the lower Yangtze River plains and the south of the mountains of the southern Anhui Province in the intersection of the zone, the territory of the south of the low mountains, hills across the intertwined, north-eastward spreading cloth; It has a humid monsoon climate in north subtropical zone, with obvious monsoon and four distinct seasons; the total area is 2,991.87 square kilometers. Tongling City, named after copper and prospered by copper, is known as "Ancient Copper Capital of China, Contemporary Copper Base", the history of copper mining and smelting began in the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, flourished in the Han and Tang dynasties, and has stretched for more than 3,500 years.The city was founded in 1956. The first copper water furnace and the first copper ingot in New China came from Tongling, the first copper industrial base was built in Tongling, the first copper stock was issued from Tongling, and the first 100 billion yuan enterprise in Anhui Province came from Tongling. Tongling City has 131.3 kilometers of Yangtze River coastline, Tongling Port is one of the first open ports in China, the first ports with direct shipping to Taiwan and the terminal port of 10,000-ton ocean liners entering the river. Tongling is an important node city of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the central city of south central Anhui, the city of South Anhui International Tourism and Culture Demonstration Zone, and the city of the Wanjiang City Belt Industrial Transfer Demonstration Zone, and is one of the eight non-ferrous metal industrial bases in China, as well as an important sulfur-phosphorus chemical industry base, a national electronic materials industry base, and an important building materials production base in the Yangtze River Basin.
In 2023, Tongling realized a regional GDP of 122.98 billion yuan, an increase of 5.6% over the same period of the previous year at comparable prices.
