Moyu County, established in 1919, was named after the Krakash River. Krakash is a Uyghur word meaning "black jade" or "ink jade". Qin Ding Huangyi Xiwaiqi Tu Zhi" for Harahashi, "Xinjiang Knowledge Strategy" for Harahashi. The Western Regions Tongwenzhi explains, "Hala, black, the river is rich in black jade, so the name." As of the end of 2019, Moyu County had a household population of 650,548. As of 2020, Moyu County has 5 towns, 11 townships, and 3 streets. Moyu County is located in the southwestern part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bordering Hotan and Lopu counties to the east by the Karakashi River, bordering Pishan County to the west by the Gobi, reaching the northern foothills of the Karakorum Mountains to the south, and entering the Taklamakan Desert to the north to neighbor Awati County, with an administrative area of 25,608 square kilometers. In 2019, the gross regional product of Moyu County is 7344.62 million yuan, the added value of the primary industry is 2147.40 million yuan, the added value of the secondary industry is 1256.13 million yuan, the general public budget revenue is 308.37 million yuan, and the general public budget expenditure is 8754.37 million yuan. On July 11, 2018, Moyu County was selected as one of the first batch of "non-heritage + poverty alleviation" key support areas. In 2020, Moyu County will withdraw from the sequence of poverty-stricken counties and realize poverty alleviation.
