Jining, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province, the former capital of the State of Lu, also known as the Canal Capital, anciently known as Jizhoufu, a Type II large city and a third-tier city, is located in southwestern Shandong Province, neighboring Linyi City to the east, bordering with Heze City to the west, Zaozhuang and Xuzhou cities to the south, and bordering with Tai'an City to the north, with a topography dominated by plains and depressions, and with terrain higher in the east and lower in the west, with a warm-temperate monsoon climate, and with distinct seasons, and with a total area of 11,000 km2. As of August 2022, the city has 2 districts, 7 counties, and 2 county-level cities under its jurisdiction. As of the end of 2022, Jining had a resident population of 8,290,600 people.
On August 30, 1983, Jining was abolished as a prefecture and changed to a city. Jining City is one of the central cities of Huaihai Economic Zone, famous historical and cultural city, waterfront eco-tourism city confirmed by the approval of Shandong Provincial Government. It has a long history and culture, and is one of the important birthplaces of the Eastern Barbarians culture, Huaxia civilization, Confucianism culture, Water Margin culture, and Canal culture. The first ancestor of humanities, the Yellow Emperor, and the Confucian sages Confucius, Mencius, Yan Hui, and Zuo Qiu Ming were all born here. The city is rich in humanities and tourism resources, with the "Three Confucius" and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal as world cultural heritages. There are 41 national key cultural relics protection units, such as Meng Temple and Meng Mansion, as well as national AAAAA tourist attractions, such as Weishan Lake Tourist Area. It is a transportation hub city. It is located at the golden division point between Beijing and Shanghai, and the Lunan High Speed Railway has six stations in Jining. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal runs through the whole city, with a main channel of 210 km and a shipping capacity of 100 million tons.
In 2022, Jining's GDP will reach 531.69 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 4.4%.
