Linqing, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province, administered by Liaocheng City, is located in the northwestern part of Shandong Province, in the northern part of Liaocheng City, at the confluence of the Zhangwei River and the Old Canal. It is adjacent to Gaotang County and Chiping District in the east, Tantao County of Handan City and Linci County of Xingtai City across the Wei Canal in the west, Dongchangfu District and Guanxian County in the south, and Xazin County of Dezhou City in the north. The terrain is flat with fewer ups and downs, high in the southwest and low in the northeast, with a more typical continental monsoon climate, covering a total area of 960 square kilometers. As of October 2022, the city has 12 towns and 4 streets. As of November 2022, the city's urban resident population was 791,400 people.
Linqing was established in the early years of the Western Han Dynasty, and was renamed Linqing in the first year of Jianping (330) of the 16th Kingdom of the Later Zhao Dynasty, due to its proximity to the Qing River. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Linqing benefited from the well-developed transportation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal and prospered economically and socially for more than 500 years, and it was an important circulation hub city and a famous commercial capital in China at that time, and it was once praised as "affluent Aqi County" by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. It is an important gateway for "the east of the mountains and the east of Jin and Hebei", and is located in the superposition area of the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin, the Central Plains Economic Zone, the economic circle of the provincial capitals, and the economic uplift of the western Shandong Province. The Beijing-Kowloon Railway runs through the north and south, and 8 national and provincial highways, Donglv Highway, De Shang Highway, and South-to-North Water Diversion Project intersect in Linqing, forming a well-connected and comprehensive transportation network.
