Shaoyang, anciently known as Baoqing, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province, located in the southwestern part of central Hunan, upstream of the Zijiang River; it is a hilly basin in the middle, neighboring Hengyang in the east, bordering Yongzhou and Guilin in the south, Huaihua in the west, and Loudi in the north; as of the end of 2021, the city had jurisdiction over three municipal districts, seven counties (one of which is an autonomous county), and was in the charge of two county-level cities, with a total area of 20,824 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, the city's resident population was 6,417,800.
Shaoyang City has a long history and its name has spread to Xiaoxiang. As early as in the Shang Dynasty, there were ancestors living in the territory, and the county was set up at the beginning of the Western Han Dynasty, passing through Zhaoling, Shaoling, Shaoyang, Minzhou, Shaozhou, Baoqing, and finally named Shaoyang. Qing Dynasty, Baoqing Municipal City Zijiang around the Guo, Shao water through the city, around the city walls and fortresses, coupled with the mountains around the water, it is not easy to attack, leaving the "iron Baoqing" reputation. Shaoyang has more than three hundred large and small tourism resources, there are world natural heritage and AAAAA level scenic area of Xinning Used Mountain, Nanshan National Park, Suining Huangsang, Wugang Yunshan, Longhui Hushangshan, Longhui Wei Yuan's former residence, Dongkou Cai E public hall, Shaodong Zhaoyang Houguo city site, Wugang Fasangyan and other humanities and beautiful scenery; had been selected as the first batch of national rule of law government construction demonstration areas and projects list, the national model city (county) list of double embrace, Hunan Province, the list of regions with obvious results in real efforts.
In 2023, Shaoyang City realized a GDP of 273.142 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%.
