Sansha City, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hainan Province, is located in the south-central part of the South China Sea and the southern part of Hainan Province, with jurisdiction over the islands and reefs of the Xisha Islands, the Zhongsha Islands, and the Nansha Islands and their sea areas, with a land area of more than 20 square kilometers, and a land and sea area of about 2 million square kilometers. Sansha City has Xisha District and Nansha District, with 10 communities under its jurisdiction. The municipal people's government is located on Yongxing Island in Xisha District. As of the end of 2021, Sansha City has a resident population of 2,300, with a 100% urban population share.
Sansha City was officially inaugurated on July 24, 2012. It is the prefecture-level city with the southernmost location, the largest area, the smallest land area and the smallest population in China, and consists of more than 280 islands, sandbars, reefs, dark sands and reef flats and their sea areas. Sansha City has a tropical maritime monsoon climate with high temperature, high humidity, high salt and high radiation throughout the year. There are many plant resources on the islands and rich marine biological resources, with unique natural landscape of tropical oceanic islands.
