Huizhou City, also known as Goose City, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province, Type II large cities, second-tier cities, one of the central cities of the Pearl River Delta region confirmed by the State Council approval, is located in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao on the east coast of the Greater Bay Area, east of Shanwei City, south of the South China Sea, connected to Shenzhen City, southwest of Dongguan City, west of the city of Guangzhou, the north of Shaoguan City, northeast of the city of Heyuan as a neighbor, is the southern subtropical monsoon climate zone. The city has a total area of 11,347 square kilometers, with two municipal districts and three counties under its jurisdiction. As of the end of 2022, Huizhou City had a resident population of 6,050,200 people.
In the fourth year of the Song Dynasty (1020), Zhenzhou was renamed Huizhou, and in 1368 (the first year of the Ming Dynasty (Hongwu)), Huizhou Road was changed to Huizhou Prefecture. The Qing Dynasty basically followed the Ming system, and in January 1988, Huizhou City (prefecture level) was established by abolishing Huiyang District. Huizhou in the Sui and Tang dynasties has been the "town of eastern Guangdong", has always been the political, economic, military, cultural center of the East River Basin and the distribution of commodities, ancient times, that is, "the famous county of Lingnan", "gateway to the eastern Guangdong". "Huizhou City is one of the most important cities in China's modern resistance. Huizhou City is the front line of China's modern history of resistance, and has established the Dongjiang Column, the main force of the South China Anti-Japanese War. Huizhou is the center city of the middle and lower reaches of the Dongjiang River, at the intersection of Hakka, Guangfu and Chaoshan cultures, where the three major ethnic groups of Guangfu, Hakka and Chaoshan coexist, and various cultures intermingle with each other in an eclectic manner, and where a variety of cultural activities such as Cantonese Han Opera, Cantonese Drama, fishermen's songs, mountain songs, Dragon Dance, Lion Dance, Spring Bull Dance, and the Yao's Fire Dog Dance are prevalent.
Huizhou is a national historical and cultural city, and has been the political, economic and cultural center of the East River Basin since ancient times. During the long process of history and civilization, Huizhou has gradually developed a bright and diversified culture. The Dongjiang civilization, which was nurtured and developed in the Dongjiang Basin, is the main component of Lingnan civilization. Huizhou is one of the important settlements and distribution centers of the Hakka people, the first of the four Hakka states, and is known as the Hakka Overseas Chinese Capital.
In 2023, Huizhou's gross regional product was 563.968 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%.
