Sanya City, abbreviated as Ya, also known as Lucheng, and anciently known as Yazhou and Yaxian, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hainan Province, located at the southernmost tip of Hainan Island, neighboring the Lingshui Lizu autonomous county to the east, the Ledong Lizu autonomous county to the west, the Baoting Lizu and Miao autonomous county to the north, and the South China Sea to the south, with a total land area of 1,921 square kilometers. As of January 2024, the city has four municipal districts under its jurisdiction. As of the end of 2022, the city had a household population of 731,000 people.
Anciently known as Yazhou, Sanya has a long and distinguished history. In the Yuanfeng yuan year (110 BC) of the Western Han Dynasty, it was serialized in the Chinese map. on September 26, 1987, it was upgraded to a prefecture-level city. Sanya has been known as the "End of the World" since ancient times because it is far away from the imperial capital and isolated overseas. Sanya was once the "Tang Mu Yi" of Mrs. Xian Taifu of Qiaoqiao in Sui Dynasty; the place where the great monk Jianzhen of Tang Dynasty came ashore and preached sutras; seven famous ministers and prime ministers of Tang and Song Dynasties were relegated to Sanya. During the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, Sanya's economy developed initially, with the cotton textile industry taking the lead in the country. Sanya is an international tourist city characterized by tropical seaside scenery, also known as the Oriental Hawaii, with unique seaside scenery. Sanya is surrounded by mountains on three sides, forming an embracing situation where mountains, sea and river merge, and the many hills also provide vantage points to look out over the sea, the river and the cityscape.In 2023, it was rated as a third-tier city.
In 2023, Sanya realized a GDP of 97.134 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 12.0% at constant prices.
