Jinshan Economic Development Zone, formerly known as Baotou Jinshan Industrial Park, was established on December 30, 2009, following approval by the municipal government. In 2012, it was designated as an autonomous regional-level industrial park and a demonstration zone for industrial transfer in the autonomous region; in 2014, it was designated as a pilot demonstration zone for industrial circular economy in the autonomous region; in June 2015, it was included among the key industrial parks along the Yellow River in the autonomous region;In 2018, it was designated as a pilot for the third batch of incremental power distribution business reforms at the national level; in 2021, it was designated as an autonomous region-level green industrial park; in 2023, it was designated as an autonomous region-level water-saving industrial park and, in the same year, as a national-level green industrial park;In 2021, as part of the optimization and restructuring of development zones in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the name was changed to the Jinshan Industrial Park of the Inner Mongolia Baotou Iron and Steel Metallurgy Development Zone. In November 2023, it was renamed the Baotou Jinshan Economic Development Zone. On May 7, 2024, it was approved as a third-batch chemical industrial park, and in June of the same year, it was recognized as an autonomous region-level park with strong scientific and technological innovation capabilities; on March 7, 2025, it was designated as an autonomous region-level carbon peak pilot.
