Tianjin is the second city in China to have its own underground railway system. Its first subway line was opened in 1976, and was only 3.6 kilometers （2.2 miles） at first and then extended to 7.4 kilometers （4.6 miles） in 1984. However, this line was closed for reconstruction in 2001 because it could not meet the rising passenger flow volume any more.

The reconstruction of Tianjin subway line 1 lasted from 2002 to June, 2006. Since then the construction of the city railway system was begun. In terms of the city's further plan, four types of metro line systems are to be built, namely, M Lines, B Lines, Z Lines and C Lines. M Lines are going to run in the city downtown （namely the city subway lines）， while the B Lines will be in Binhai New District. Z Lines will connect the downtown and Binhai New District and C Lines will run by the Haihe River.

Now four subway lines of the M Lines are in operation, which include line 1, line 2, line 3 and line 9. All other lines are still under construction or in future plans.

Ticket Fare & Valid Time

The fare of Tianjin subway is distance-based and varies from CNY 2 to 5 RMB. CNY 2 is charged for 1 to 5 stops, CNY 3 for 6 to 10 stops, CNY 4 for 10 to 16 stops, and CNY 5 for 17 or more stops.

Tips:

1. Tickets of the subway or light rail can be purchased from both of the manual ticket windows and the self-service vender machines at every station.

2. One ticket is valid within three hours. Once one ticket is used, passengers need to leave the subway system within three hours.

3. 10 % discount can be enjoyed for passengers with Tianjin City Card.

4. One child below 1.1 meters high can be taken for free by one adult. If there is more than one child, other children need to buy the tickets.

5. Luggage under 20kg and 0.06 cubic meters could be taken for free. Tickets should be bought if the luggage weighs 20 to 30kg or is 0.06 to 0.15 cubic meters. Luggage over 30kg or larger than 0.15 cubic meters cannot be taken on the trains if not get permitted.
