In the ninth year of the Ming Dynasty (1376), Jinan became the capital of Shandong Province. In July, 1929, Jinan City was officially established. Jinan is a national historical and cultural city, named for its location in the south of the "Jishui", one of the four ancient ditches (the former course of which is the present-day Yellow River). As far back as 9,000 years ago, in the early Neolithic Age, there were ancestors living here. The Longshan Culture, characterized by polished black pottery 4,000 to 4,500 years ago, was first discovered in 1928 in Longshan Town, an eastern suburb of Jinan, and was named after it. Jinan is known for its many springs, including the "72 famous springs", the "First Spring in the World", the "Lotus Blossoms on Four Sides, Willows on Three Sides, and a City of Mountain Colors and Half a City of Lakes", as well as the "Eight Scenic Spots of Jinan", which are famous all over the world. Jinan is famous for its eight scenic spots, and is a tourist city with unique features of "mountains, springs, lakes, rivers and cities".
