Sanmenxia City, prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, also known as Shanzhou, the City of the Swan, and Shangyang City, is located in the southern Golden Triangle region of the Yellow River at the junction of Henan, Jin, and Shaanxi provinces, with mountainous, hilly, and loess plateau landscapes, and a warm-temperate continental monsoon-type semi-arid climate, with a total area of 9,935 square kilometers. According to legend, Dayu ruled over the water by wielding a divine axe to split the high mountains into three gorges, namely "Man Gate", "God Gate" and "Ghost Gate", and drew the water of the Yellow River to the east, thus Sanmenxia got its name.
