Huai'an City, abbreviated as "Huai" and formerly known as Huaiyin City, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province and a Type II large city. Located in the north-central part of Jiangsu Province and the eastern part of the Jianghuai Plain, Huai'an City is located in the Yangtze River Delta region, and is an important central city in northern Jiangsu, a modernized central city in the northern part of the Yangtze River Delta, a member of the Nanjing Metropolitan Circle, a first-mentioned and first-promoted city of the Huaihe River Ecological and Economic Belt, and a third-tier city. It is situated in the crossroads of the ancient Huaihe River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, and is situated in the north-south boundary line of China and possesses the fourth largest freshwater lake of China, Hongze Lake. As of 2023, Huai'an City has 4 districts and 3 counties under its jurisdiction; it covers an area of 10,030 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, the resident population was 4,553,100 people. Huai'an is a national civilized city, a national historical and cultural city, a national health city, a national garden city, a national model city for environmental protection, one of the main birthplaces of Huaiyang cuisine, and has been awarded the title of "Gourmet Capital of the World" by UNESCO, and is one of the birthplaces of the ancient cultures of the Jianghuai Basin. Huai'an was established in Qin Dynasty, and has a history of over 2200 years, with the site of "Qingliangang Culture" in its territory. It used to be the hub of canal transportation, the key to salt transportation, and the "meeting place of southern boats and northern horses", with the Governor's Office of Jiangnan River Road and the Governor's Office of Cao Transportation, and was historically known as one of the "four major metropolises" along the canal along with Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Yangzhou, and the section of the Grand Canal of China, Huai'an, was selected as one of the World Heritage Sites, and was named the "Canal Capital of China". Tourist attractions in Huai'an City include Zhou Enlai's hometown scenic spot, Liu Laoshuang Company Memorial Park of the New Fourth Army, Huanghuatang Memorial Hall of the Military Headquarters of the New Fourth Army, Memorial Hall of the Former Site of the Suwan Border Region Government, the Cultural Corridor of the Li-Canal, Qingyan Garden, and the Huai'an West Amusement Park. In 2023, Huai'an City realized a gross regional product of 501.506 billion yuan, an increase of 7.8% over the previous year at constant prices.
