Shimen, belonging to Changde City, Hunan Province, is the extreme north of western Hunan. Shimen is located in the junction of Hunan and Hubei, looking east at Dongting Lake, south of Taohuayuan, west of Zhangjiajie, and north of the Yangtze River Three Gorges, and is known as the "Gateway to the Wuling Mountains" and the "North Pole of Xiaoxiang". The terrain is in the shape of a curved gourd, tilting from west to southeast, with 236 rivers and streams running across the whole territory. The average annual temperature is 16.7℃. It is a large county of mineral resources in Hunan Province, with the world's largest reserves of sulphur ore, Asia's largest silica sand ore, phosphorus ore.
Shimen County covers an area of 3,970 square kilometers. According to the seventh census, as of 00:00 on November 1, 2020, the resident population of Shimen County was 559,457 people.
Shimen is an ethnic minority-dominated county, with residents of 16 ethnic minorities, including Tujia, Hui, and Miao. Historically, it is the center area ruled by Timping Tusi, and the Tujia ethnic group accounts for 51% of the total population of the county, with strong traditional Tujia customs.
Honorary labels include: "Hometown of Chinese Famous Tea", "Hometown of Chinese Tea Zen", "China Green Tea Export Base County", "Hometown of Chinese Citrus ", "The First County of Early-Maturing Mandarin Oranges in China", "Strong County of Tourism in Hunan Province", and a pilot county for the construction of National Main Functional Areas (National Key Ecological Functional Areas).
In December 2019, it became a pilot unit for the construction of the national rural governance system.
In February 2022, the National Sanitation Association recognized Shimen County in Hunan Province as a 2021 National Sanitary Township (County).
