Weiyuan County, belonging to Dingxi City, Gansu Province, is located in the central part of Gansu Province and the west-central part of Dingxi City, between longitude 103°44′~104°20′E and latitude 34°53′~35°25′N, with a temperate continental climate and a total area of 2,065 square kilometers. As of the end of 2022, Weiyuan County had a resident population of 273,900. As of June 2023, Weiyuan County has 12 towns and 4 townships under its jurisdiction, with the county people's government stationed at No. 1 New Street in Qingyuan Township.
Weiyuan County was named after the source of the Wei River. In the second year of Emperor Gao Di of the Han Dynasty (205 BC), a county system was established with the name Shouyang County. In the 17th year of Daitong of the Western Wei Dynasty (551), it was renamed Weiyuan County, and in 2003, it came under the jurisdiction of Dingxi City. In Weiyuan County, there are three ancient cultures, Yangshao Culture, Majiayao Culture and Qijia Culture, and the culture of "Dayu Guiding Wei", which is based on the spirit of "publicity and forgetting self-interest", "blocking to dredging" and "science of water management", and "Boyi Shuqi", which is based on the spirit of "giving up the position of the king to each other", "being ashamed of eating weekly corn", and "being modest and observant", is the most important culture in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. "It is one of the birthplaces of ancient culture in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. There are two AAAA-level scenic spots (Weiheyuan Scenic Spot and Shouyang Mountain Scenic Spot) and two AA-level tourist attractions (Ba Lingqiao Laojun Mountain Park and Weiyuan Potato Seed Potato Science and Technology Demonstration Park) in the county, and the scenic spots of Shouyang Mountain and Tianjing Gorge have been named "National Forest Park," "Provincial Geopark" and "Provincial Geopark" and "Provincial Geopark. " and "Provincial Scenic Spot".
